HISTORICAL TIMELINE

A Living Witness to History

Age & Size
In 1900, the Pennsylvania State Forestry Department estimated the tree to be over 250 years old, measuring an astonishing 27 feet in circumference.
In 1957, the main trunk was struck by lightning, leaving it visibly hollow and causing a massive branch to fall. Remarkably, the tree re-rooted and continued to grow laterally and horizontally, demonstrating extraordinary resilience.
The Pennsylvania Forestry Association recognized the Old Sycamore as being over 300 years old in 1982. In 2014, Monumental Trees documented its girth at 25 feet (7.62 meters), confirming its monumental status.

Our Town Is Home to a Heroic Symbol

In the heart of Lancaster County, located at 265 Plane Tree Drive, in a peaceful cul-de-sac just off Old Tree Drive, stands a remarkable natural landmark known as Lancaster County’s Old Sycamore. These roads sit within what is now called the Old Sycamore Industrial Park.

This legendary tree has been an understated yet powerful presence for over 350 years. Long before modern development — when Pennsylvania was still known as “Penn’s Woods” — the Old Sycamore was already standing tall.

The land itself carries deep historical significance, originating from a 1718 Penn Grant, deeded by William Penn to early settlers. Through centuries of change, the Old Sycamore has remained a constant, rooted in history and community.
